It is a very legitimate argument to make that child support is your kids’ money, not yours, and you have an obligation to fight for it and accept it.

That is right, but sometimes you can be so right you are wrong.

To start, the average sum of child support single mothers receive is just over two hundred dollars per month, and less than half receive the full sum awarded by the courts. Even if the amount is higher and you do receive child support regularly, still think very carefully about accepting and pursuing this income.

The indisputable argument against any type of support is that it’s irresponsible to build a life around income you have no control over. Your kids’ dad could lose his job, die, become disabled, choose a lower-paying career, see his business tank, hide all of his income offshore, get busted for cooking meth in a trailer in the middle of the New Mexico desert and be sentenced to the can, or simply go MIA. You have no control over that, and if you depend on his income, you live in fear every single day that it will go away. That is a terrifying, exhausting way to live. Shift that toxic, fearful energy into your own income and career, which you do have control over, and watch your life change forever and for the better.
